If they think I won't fight, they better think again.
So, in early September, I checked out a book on reserve. These books can be checked out for 2 hours, and then must be rechecked out if necessary. I'm not the type to use up 2 hours, especially in a library. I like to make copies of the pages I need, turn it in, and get out, which is exactly what I did.
The girl working at the counter was new to the job, so when it was checked out to me, one of the experienced librarians helped her out. I took the book to the copier machines, which are 50 feet away from the counter. I made my copies, went back to the desk, and handed it to the same girl. I said, "Thank you" and walked out of the door.
2 days later, I see that I have a late fine. I go back to the library that day and ask why. They tell me that it was never turned in. I explain what happened, and what I hear is, "It's not that we don't believe you, it's just what we do whenever a book is missing." What they do is fill out a small piece of green paper and file it away.
Yesterday, I received some mail from the UT Library System. They're trying to charge me $166 for the missing book and late fees.
I didn't lose the book. I turned it in. It's not my fault that they hired someone incompetent and didn't train her until classes started. So, when I go back to campus, I'm going to take this to the library supervisor. And then an appeals committee. And higher if need be. I'm not paying for a book I didn't lose.
You can be sure I'll be writing each day's details on the situation. And you can bet that I'll never use a library again.
